The Meat & Wine Co Canberra-Canberra-Nathan Wakefield

I heard good things about this restaurant, based upon the name and interstate locations.

The food was very ordinary and the service was terrible. We ordered a valentines day set menu, booked and paid in advance.

The server was inexperienced and said on a number of occasions that they had an unexpected high demand and were overbooked, so service was slower.

Drinks took 30 mins to come out. One of the first two entrees was tasty, but was filled with some unknown inedible fibre, a bit like chewing on plastic and had to keep pulling out from mouth (suspected from celariac). Tartare was inconsistently chopped, with very large pieces, but was tasty.

Oysters were ok but were inconsistently dressed, with some having toppings, some not, some a little, some a lot.

Main course was relatively fine, steak was cooked to requested level but undersalted and gravy was bland.

Desert took a very long time to come out, and the waiter brought the food to the wrong table next to us, which sat there about 5-10m before it was noticed. The waiter collected it and brought it to the manager at the end of the bar, and spoke with him. I suspected it was our long overdue desert and watched him carefully. He then brought the food back to the service area, collected the second plate and brought it to our table.

I have no issues with mistakes being made, but in covid times I do not want to eat food that has been sitting on a strangers table for 5-10 minutes being breathed on etc. I told the server this, he said that right at the last moment as he picked up the plate the chef replaced the dish with a new one, which I knew to be untrue. He stood by his word and said we could review the security footage.

FInally the receipt came out incorrect with miscellaneous entries (calamari on the receipt apparently substituted for some dish which wasnt coded on the register). The oysters also werent coded and so the receipt was extremely difficult to read, some items on the set menu were charged, some were listed as $0, and some new dishes like the ‘calamari’ on the receipt with a price making it very difficult to determine if it was correct or not.

Overall the dinner cost a little short of $400, I am reasonable and understand mistakes, but at least on this particular night the service was poor, the food was mediocre and the billing was wrong, and this does not reflect the cost this restaurant charges.
