6HEAD is beautifully situated in the heart of The Rocks waterfront at Campbells Cove. The building was built in 1800s and kept in impeccable form. So, what better way, to experience fine dining, with a twist… yes, we had a Vivid Multi-Sensory Dining experience. The function took place upstairs, where we were instantly captivated by their spectacular lighting show. We were attended to right away and served with our cocktail of choice, which I had Blue Alize, very refreshing and delicious. Each meal had its own unique sensory lighting story to tell – the lighting never ceased to amaze us, truly was a fun experience. The projection of the lighting was positioned accurately at individual tables and where your meals were to be served. The food was simple – yet with a modern twist, presented with class, cooked to perfection and tasted superb! The package included three course menu and unlimited two-hour beverage. My choice of menu was for Starters: Calamari (buttermilk and confit garlic marinated, southern-style coated and fried, served with Yuzu aioli), not presented as calamari rings, that we’re so used to, but like small pieces of schnitzels, juicy and tender and the Yuzu aioli was a perfect combination. Main Meal: 200g Fillet (Tender Valley, grain fed 200 days – grilled to your liking, served with either chips or salad), the fillet was amazing, that literally melted in your mouth and the chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. If I have to fault this dish, it would be that the size of the fillet was too small… for me and why can’t you have both chips and salad? I always have my steak with spuds (whether it is baked, boiled or fried) and veggies or salads. That to me… is a complete meal. Dessert: Rice Pudding (caramelised rice pudding, spiced orange, roasted quince, almond crumb and vanilla ice-cream). That was truly amazing – nothing I have had before, believe me, I thought I knew my rice puddings but this one was a cross between Crème Brûlée and Rice Pudding and the flavours together was decadent and the selection of fruit tantalised my tastebuds. Now… I was asked if this sensory dining experience was “mind blowing”? No, it was not, it was more of an interesting but fun experience. Perhaps my standards were too high? Having read that the sensory dining experience will take you to a new level of sight, taste, sound, touch and scent, with the help of the production of lighting and storytelling, I instantly thought of ‘Heston Blumenthal’. Remarkable chef and in fact, a pioneer of multi-sensory cooking, who dares to take you on a “mind blowing” food experience/journey. Would I recommend it? Absolutely, just for the experience. Would I do it again? Yes, just to compare, as this was my first experience. Perhaps this review is rather harsh, as it is not fair, that I do not have another similar experience to compare with. Although, there is room for improvements, I can guarantee you, that the food tasted amazing! The waitstaff were super friendly, helpful, always with a smile, polite and worked off their feet, to be sure that you will have an exceptional time. The ambience of the place had that magical feel, with that lighting production and I felt comfortable, warm, and relaxed. The table seated ten, but it was large and spacious… no elbow touching, no clutter whatsoever and the chairs were comfortable. And on top of that, we had the perfect view of the Opera House with the Vivid light show happening – what more can you ask for?
